Tips and Tricks for minimizing side effects
- Hydration
- Drink at least two full 16-ounce glasses of water within a few hours before your infusion.
- Continue drinking plenty of fluids after the treatment.
- Proper hydration protects your kidneys and helps flush the medication through your system.
- Pain Relief and Fever Management
- Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) on the day of your infusion and for about 3 days afterward if your doctor recommends it. This helps reduce flu-like symptoms, fevers, and muscle or joint aches.
- Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) unless your healthcare team specifically approves them. Combining NSAIDs with Reclast can increase the risk of kidney damage.
- Infusion
- Request your doctor to prescribe a slow infusion (1 hour if possible) with increased volume of saline and followed by additional saline
- Supplements and Preparation
- Take prescribed calcium and vitamin D supplements to prevent your blood calcium levels from dropping too low.
